How to Add a Reset Button

This is a tutorial on how to add a reset button/reset visuals in Power BI dashboard pages. Check out the video and visual guide below.

Creating a reset button requires 2 Power BI elements:

  1. Bookmarks
  2. Buttons

The bookmark will hold the "cleared" visuals. When you click the button, the page will return to the state held by the bookmark.

1. Create a bookmark
  • Bookmarks store the current status of all the visuals on your page so the first step is making sure your page is fully "cleared".

  • Select the "View" tab on the top left of the page.
  • Then select the "Bookmarks" tab.
  • This will open the "Bookmarks" section on the right side of the screen.
  • Click the double arrows above the "Bookmarks" label to open the panel.

  • Click "Add" to create a new Bookmark.
  • Click the 3 dots on the right side of the bookmark name to rename the Bookmark.
  • Rename it with the name of the page and something like "Clear" or "Reset"

  • Now select all of the visuals on the current page by either clicking each one at a time and holding the "Ctrl" button or by holding and dragging your mouse from one corner to the diagonal corner.

  • While all of your cleared visuals are selected, again click the 3 dots to the right of your new bookmark.
  • Then make sure the "Selected Visuals" check is marked which is at the bottom of that expanded screen.

  • Next, click "Update" on that same screen. This stores the state of your screen to that bookmark.

Your reset bookmark is now saved for this page!

2. Create a button
  • We will now connect a button to your newly finished bookmark.
  • Select the "Insert" tab on the top left menu.
  • Select "Buttons" on the far right of the "Insert" menu and then select the "Reset" button. You can select any button and add your preferred "reset" icon or image but the "Reset" option Power BI provides works well also.

  • On my page, I thought it made the most sense for the button to be in the top right corner so I moved it there!

  • Select the button.
  • In the "Format button" pane on the right side of the screen, find the "Action" property in the bottom section of the menu and turn the "Action" ON.
  • Under Action - "Type", select "Bookmark".
  • Under Action - "Bookmark," selec the name of the button you just created.

Now, test your button out by selecting a few filters and then holding down "Ctrl" and clicking the Reset button!

Important Notes

  • Power BI's bookmarks are unique to each page, so you will have to create a button and bookmark for each page in your dashboard.
  • If you add new filters to your dashboard, you will want to select all the visuals, including your new filters, and "Update" the bookmark
